Ms Hunter said the issue was causing heartache for parents every summer and called on the Education Authority (EA) to find a permanent solution to the problems.
East Derry MLA Ms Hunter said: “I attended an event yesterday in Stormont regarding SEN children who have yet to receive placements.
“This is an issue at every level involving nursery, primary and secondary schools. I am deeply concerned that children still continue to have no placements and the message this sends to SEN children and their families about ensuring equality and the right to access education.
“Parents have highlighted concerns around lack of communication from the EA regarding these placements and many feel they have been left in the dark about one of the most important aspects of their child’s lives.
“I have asked the EA what targets they have set to respond to parents, how it is monitored and how this can be improved. I’m also seeking clarity around if family liaison officers will be increased from this year to meet the rising demand in need.
“In response, the EA have been aspirational in stating they hope to not have family liaison officers next year as they hope they will have resolved issues with placements by next year and reach appropriate capacity with staff.
“Past experience has shown that while well-intended, this may not be the case and the EA must ensure they have plans in place to deal with every potential outcome.
“Since 2018, SEN statements have increased by 50%, this figure may continue to rise, yet we’re not seeing a similar increase in funding to meet demand.
“I particularly note there is a significant number of those children from the Belfast and Newry areas who are struggling to access the education setting that best works for them.
“I welcome that £2m of investment in recruitment is now taking place to secure 14 link officers and 27 support officers, but this must deliver real change for SEN pupils and their families.
“The existing situation of children and parents being let down year after year cannot be allowed to continue.”
