Said Ms Hunter: “I am shocked and appalled to hear the PSNI confirm today that known dog abusers in Ballykelly are still in possession of dogs despite ongoing charges of animal cruelty.
“The statement from the PSNI confirming that known dog abusers continue to own dogs highlights serious shortcomings in our legislation and impinges legislators to do more to safeguard the wellbeing of companion animals.
“I have written to the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and have
requested that his department investigates this as a matter of urgency.
“Cases of suspected animal abuse are brought to our office on a weekly basis, and it is immensely frustrating to learn that even when abusers are under police investigation, they continue to pose ongoing risks to the wellbeing of animals.
“Having already called for the establishment of an Animal Welfare Commissioner at Stormont, the news emerging from the PSNI underlines that the creation of such a commission could not come soon enough.
“I am in regular contact with a number of concerned third parties to build consensus for the creation of an Animal Welfare Commission.
“I will continue to fight to ensure all animals are able to live free from harm and abuse, and that abusers receive appropriate punishment for these despicable crimes.”
