People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said the World Court Ruling is a further call for action to end 300 days of genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
Said the Foyleside councillor: “This weekend will mark 300 days of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
“The recent ruling by the World Court on the illegality of Israel’s violent decades long occupation of East Jerusalem and the West Bank is a further call to action, though none should be required.
“Israel can only continue its barbarous assault on the people of Gaza because of the complicity of world leaders.
“The British government continues to dither and find excuses for not ending arms sales and military support for Israel.
“The Irish government refuses to sanction Israel and suspend trade with a state committing genocide.
“The Stormont Executive is silent.
“The people of Derry have consistently stood with the people of Palestine. They have demanded the Council use its voice to demand an end to the Gaza genocide and the implementation of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel and those complicit with it.
“We will not go silent while Israel continues to drop bombs on families sleeping in their beds.
“We encourage people to join the Derry IPSC action for Gaza in Guildhall Square on Saturday.”
July full meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council backs People Before Profit Gaza motion:
“Council agrees with the International Court of Justice on its findings that the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem and the West Bank is illegal, that Israel must immediately dismantle its settlements and evacuate the settlers living there, and that Israel must provide full reparations for the damage caused to Palestinians due to the illegal occupation.
“Council will write to the Stormont Executive and the British government urging them to adopt the findings of the ICJ and to support the calls for a complete suspension of arms and all military support to Israel.”
