In the final stretch Legacy appeared to have run out of steam, hitting four fences and notching up 16 penalty points.
There was little point in the Ardmore rider carrying on in the event and he decided to bow out gracefully.
After the event, Daniel told RTE Sport: “She was jumping so well all week and I was busy about her being tired and stuff. She came out today better than ever but I lost my stirrup at the top of the arena and then I was too far off the triple bar and she had that one down.
“And when you have one down I guess me and the horse, it takes a bit of energy and motivation. When she knocked another one I thought she had given me so much this week that I was happy enough with that.
“I am delighted with Legacy with the way she has performed and that I have been able to hold up to her standards but I am sorry that it didn’t pay off today.
“I have had so much support from people at home.
“I will go back with my held high and we will win a medal at the next one.”
It was Daniel’s first Olympic Games representing Team Ireland at the Chateau de Versailles.
Asked how he was enjoying being at Paris 2024, Daniel replied: “I am loving every minute. I will take a lot of memories from here.”
Well done Daniel!
