A stipulation within the Autism Strategy, the role will oversee the implementation of the Strategy’s objectives and will ensure consistency across autism services.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I am delighted that the long awaited role of an Independent Autism Reviewer will be filled from September.
“This is a momentous day for the North and for individuals with autism and their families; it has been made possible by their persistent efforts and the ferocious efforts of campaigning and advocacy groups who continue to fight for improved services for people with autism.
“I’ve been raising this issue for some time with the successive Health Ministers and I commend Minister Nesbitt for making this small step, that could make a seismic difference.
“This role is crucial and will deliver accountability, ensuring the Autism Strategy is fully implemented and that it effectively meets the needs of people with autism; delivering consistent support and improving early diagnosis.
“An Independent Autism Reviewer alongside the Autism Strategy will transform lives.
