Mr Durkan has previously criticised a lackadaisical approach to infrastructural improvements, including road safety and street lighting, in the Coshquin area which have been placed on the backburner until the A2 Buncrana Road Dualling Project is progressed.
Said the Foyle MLA: “The exit from the Coshquin Estate on to the Buncrana Road is a death trap with motorists trying to navigate into a fast flowing traffic on this busy stretch of road.
“A lack of safety measures has resulted in numerous collisions at this junction and it’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured.
“There has been huge recent development in this area with more development planned.
“This coupled with road closures at Coshquin and Whitehouse, has seen more traffic diverted to and using the Buncrana Road, which has exacerbated existing issues.
“From installing street lighting to traffic calming measures, the department has been reticent to make necessary improvements with the excuse that they will be addressed as part of the A2 Dualling Project.
“People have waited 50 years for this project to be delivered which has been delayed further for a third public consultation to take place.
“DfI Roads has agreed to renew road makings, replace signage and cut back vegetation restricting sightlines in the area.
“However, I will push to see vital road safety improvements delivered for this long neglected area.
“This issue can’t be kicked further down the road, it impacts residents on a daily basis, they shouldn’t have to wait any longer to feel safe driving to and from their homes.”
