Councillor Shaun Harkin has called for urgent intervention to save the Derry based charity (MAN)
The People Before Profit councillor described the organisation as a vital lifeline for men in our community.
Said the Foyleside councillor: “There is a mental health crisis facing all the people of Derry and Northern Ireland
“MEN provides an incredible service outside of statutory bodies to help men in the North West.
“The suicide rate among men in Northern Ireland remains alarmingly high. In 2022, 76.8% of the 203 suicide deaths registered were males.
“In Derry, the situation is dire, so many families and communities have been devastated by the loss of loved ones.
“The North West of Ireland faces a significant shortfall in mental health services.
“One in five adults and one in eight children in Northern Ireland have a probable mental illness.
“Despite the pressing need, there is a severe lack of mental health professionals and resources, particularly in the North West, exacerbating the crisis and leaving many without the support they desperately need.
“Addiction continues to be a major issue among males in Derry.
“Statistics from the Northern Ireland Substance Misuse Database reveal that the majority of clients presenting to services for substance misuse are male.
“Alcohol-specific death rates in Derry City & Strabane District Council area are the highest in Northern Ireland, at 28.8 per 100,000 population.
“The Vital Role of Men’s Action Network Derry has been a beacon of hope, providing essential services such as counseling, support groups, and outreach programs tailored specifically for men.
“These services have been instrumental in addressing mental health issues, reducing the stigma associated with seeking help, and providing a safe space for men to share their struggles and find support.
“Without MAN it is a terrifying thought as to what will happen to those who avail of its services.
“We demand that the Stormont recognises the critical role that Men’s Action Network plays in our community and takes immediate action to secure its future.
“Derry cannot afford to lose this organisation.
“PBP fully support the funding of MAN and demand that there is a new focus on both mental health and addiction services within the North West.
“The statistics are clear: men in Derry and Northern Ireland are facing a mental health crisis.
“The services provided by Men’s Action Network are more crucial than ever.
“Money must be provided to save this vital organisation,” added Cllr Harkin.
