The installation went up in September outside Badger’s Bar on Orchard Street.
It sparked much criticism with tourists visiting the area to get pictures taken at the mural.
On Monday, the awning was removed on but it is not known whether this is just a temporary or permanent removal.
The mural was first unveiled in 2019 and has become one of the most visited sites in Derry.
Thousands of visitors along with locals have beaten a path flocked to the pub to take a selfie with Erin, Michelle, Orla, Clare, and “the wee English fella” James.
Derry City and Strabane District Council, which has responsibility for planning matters, is currently investigating the erection of the outdoor awning.
Planning permission for an awning was granted in 2022.
A spokesperson for DCSDC told the BBC the permission “did not include the awning and structure in the elevation where the Derry Girls mural is located”.“Council has been engaging directly with the applicant in relation to this matter,” the spokesperson added.
