A KNEECAP gig in Derry has been moved from the Waterside to a venue in the Cityside after unionist objections.
The gig was originally set to take place on Saturday, November 2 in St Columb’s Park.
The event had already been rescheduled following what the event promoters Sorcass said were “unexpected objections from local representatives”.
The Irish language trio – made up of rappers Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap from Belfast and Derry’s DJ Provai – had already hit back at DUP opposition to the gig, writing on social media site X: “We’ve played gigs across the world this year but in Próvaí’s home town this is the craic….”
DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton told BBC Radio Foyle: “The idea of bringing a group such as Kneecap – a provocative, controversial group with all that goes with it in terms of their lyrics and behaviour – the idea of bringing that to the park is something which I think the majority of people will recognise is not a wise idea.”
In their social media post, KNEECAP added: “F**k the DUP – Free Palestine.”
The event is now set to take place on Saturday, November 23 at Templemore Sports Complex.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the event promoters Sorcass said: “Following objections raised by the DUP and parts of the Unionist community, the much-anticipated KNEECAP show on November 23rd has been relocated from St.Columb’s Park to the historic Templemore Sports Complex on the City Side of Derry.
“Originally set for St.Columb’s Park, a shared space symbolizing inclusivity, the event faced backlash from the DUP and sections of the Unionist community, who voiced concerns over the cultural and political sensitivities surrounding the band’s performance.
“While organizers firmly believe that shared public spaces should be accessible to all, the priority remains ensuring that the event proceeds smoothly and safely. After careful consideration, the decision was made to move the show to Templemore Sports Complex.”
The spokesperson added: “This relocation not only ensures the event goes ahead, but also breathes new life into a venue with a rich musical history.
“Templemore Sports Complex has hosted legendary acts in the past, including Thin Lizzy, The Waterboys, and Rory Gallagher, though it hasn’t been used for live concerts in many years.
“The venue’s revival for KNEECAP’S show marks a return to Derry’s proud live music tradition, making this event not only a concert but a celebration of the city’s musical heritage.
“We were excited about St. Columb’s Park as a shared space, but after the objections from the DUP and members of the Unionist community, we made the decision to relocate.
“Templemore Sports Complex holds a special place in Derry’s live music history, and we’re thrilled to bring it back to life for Kneecap’s performance. It’s the perfect setting for what’s going to be a truly unforgettable night.”
The Sorcass statement added: “The event will take place inside a large carnival-style tent with top-tier production and sound, creating an electric atmosphere worthy of both the venue’s legacy and Kneecap’s highly anticipated performance.
“Final tickets can be bought online, or in person at Nacional De Cuba bar, Cool Discs, and Ferry Clever shop. Fans are encouraged to act quickly as tickets are selling fast—first come, first served.
“To ensure smooth access to the venue, organizers are currently liaising with Translink NI to arranged free shuttle buses from the city centre to Templemore Sports Complex and back on the night of the show.”
