A community organisation has warned that vapes containing weed killer and ketamine are being supplied to children in Derry .
The warning was sounded by the Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership based on information from an ‘early warning system’ for drugs and alcohol run by Health and Social Care authorities in Northern Ireland.
It shared a letter from the Drug and Alcohol Monitoring and Information System (DAMIS), stating that a “partner organisation” had provided information about individuals supplying “vape juice that contains ketamine, weed killer and alloy cleaner to children”.
The letter says: “DAMIS has received information from a partner organisation that individuals in the Waterside area of Derry are supplying vape juice that contains ketamine, weed killer and alloy cleaner to children.
“We remind all services, especially those involved with children and families in this area and across the district, to promote extreme caution.
“If you have any further information relating to this report or similar circumstances, please forward it to DAMIS at [email protected].”
The letter also states that “information provided to DAMIS may be suspected (ie not confirmed) or form part of an ongoing investigation”.
DAMIS is described on its website as an “early warning system” that government organisations can use to find out about “emerging trends in drug misuse”.
Others include the Department of Health, Department of Justice and the PSNI.
Its information, according to its website, “usually comes from local drug and alcohol support organisations, or from people who misuse or have misused substances themselves”.
