The Foyle MLA participated on a panel at the annual Renewables NI Smart Energy Conference, where key stakeholders in the renewable energy sector highlighted the critical barriers facing the industry.
Ms. McLaughlin said: “Today’s conference underscored a stark reality—our current planning system is not fit for purpose if we are to deliver on our renewable energy commitments.
“The current system is too slow and complex. Delays and regulatory hurdles can last several years, stifling progress on vital projects and the net zero targets are at significant risk as a result.
“The system must be reformed.
“Every day that we delay renewable energy projects, we fail to protect our environment and secure a sustainable future for the next generation.
“To meet the 80% target, we need a planning system that prioritizes renewable energy projects and accelerates the transition away from fossil fuels.
“Continued expansion of renewable energy generation is also key to further economic prosperity, including job creation and regional development opportunities, particularly in rural areas.
“With the right policies in place, Northern Ireland can become a leader in the green energy transition, setting an example for other regions to follow.
“The onus is on the Department for Infrastructure and relevant authorities to work closely with the renewable energy sector to identify and implement necessary reforms.
“The Executive also has a critical role to play and must place planning reform at the top of the agenda, ensuring that Northern Ireland remains on track to meet its climate goals.
“Renewables are our greatest opportunity to achieve energy independence, reduce carbon emissions, and boost economic growth. However, we need a system that facilitates, not frustrates, this potential.
“I am committed to working with Renewables NI, industry experts, and colleagues across the Assembly to drive the changes needed.”
