SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has sought an intervention from the British Government to support lower commercial flight fares for people travelling from the City of Derry Airport.
The British Government and Northern Ireland Executive currently contribute funding toward a Public Service Obligation route between Derry and London but flight prices often put people off.
Speaking this afternoon following an urgent question in the House of Commons to the Department of Transport, Mr Eastwood said: “The City of Derry Airport is a vital piece of transport infrastructure, not just for local people but as a means of generating investment in our city.
“Sustaining the airport is important for Derry’s future.
“I was pleased when the Public Service Obligation route between Derry and London was renewed earlier this year and new routes from the airport are great news.
“But it is important that flight fares are accessible to people who want to use our airport rather than making the journey elsewhere.
“That’s why I raised the issue in the House of Commons with Transport Minister Mike Kane today.
“I am glad that he has committed to reviewing this during the next renewal of PSO routes.
“I will continue to work to make Derry flights more accessible for everyone.”
