McLaughlin questions how Executive will deliver on Programme for Government

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has criticised the Executive Office for their failure to clarify how the commitments outlined in the draft Programme for Government (PfG) will be measured or delivered.

It follows a meeting of the Executive Office on Wednesday where officers were questioned on the PfG.

Ms McLaughlin said: “People in Northern Ireland deserve more than vague promises; they deserve clear, measurable commitments that will genuinely change their lives for the better.

“It’s deeply disappointing that, despite repeated requests for clarity, Executive Office officials have failed to provide any meaningful explanation of how progress will be tracked or how success will be defined.

“Every day people are dealing with challenges, from the cost-of-living crisis to our overburdened health services.

“When it comes to outlining how the PfG will tackle these issues head-on, there is an alarming absence of detail.

“How are we supposed to measure improvement, how will we know if the Executive is succeeding in their stated aims?

“It is of paramount importance that the Executive introduce a clear framework for tracking progress against the PfG commitments and provide regular updates to the Assembly and the public on the impact of these policies.

“Without concrete, measurable objectives, the draft Programme for Government risks being little more than a list of unrealised priorities. The people of Northern Ireland deserve a government that not only sets goals but is also accountable for delivering on them.”
