Mr Eastwood said that everyone should make an effort to show women in the city that they are supported and that we will all work to keep them safe.
Mr Eastwood said that the fear felt by women and girls in Derry is totally unacceptable and that action is needed from police, the Department of Justice and everyone who shares the city to erase the scourge.
A rally in support of women’s safety is planned for Guildhall Square in Derry on Friday, November 8 at 6.15pm.
Colum Eastwood MP said: “It is totally unacceptable to me that women and girls in Derry live in constant fear that they’re going to be attacked, sexually assaulted or murdered.
“Ordinary every day things like going for a walk on your own or going to the shops at night have become genuinely terrifying prospects for far too many women and young girls.
“We all have a responsibility to do something about it. I don’t want my girls, or anyone else’s children, growing up thinking that they’re not safe here.
“The police have a role, the Department of Justice has a role through the framework to end violence against women and girls but we as people who live here have to challenge the culture that makes women afraid.
“I will be joining the demonstration on Friday evening and I would encourage anyone else able to make it to come along as well.
“The first step in challenging this atmosphere is to show the women and girls of this city that we support them and we’re not taking these attacks sitting down.”
