Moore: Solidarity with NIC-ICTU conference Winter Fuel Payment motion

Freeze the Cuts campaigner Ellen Moore says her movement backs union motion calling for the Winter Fuel Payment to be restored to pensioners.

The Derry campaigner said: “Freeze the Cuts campaign are fully behind the motion being brought forward to the NIC-ICTU Conference being held in the Guildhall this week calling for the Winter Fuel Payment to be reinstated.

“We’re gathering with the trade unions on the Guildhall steps at 1.15pm on Thursday in solidarity with the motion and encourage anyone supporting the campaign to come along.

“The motion from UNITE and GMB states: ‘Conference condemns the recent decision by the UK government to end the universal entitlement to winter fuel payments, a decision that was enforced in Northern Ireland by the Stormont Executive parties’.

She added: “We have been living in fear since Starmer cut the Winter Fuel Payment.

“We’ve heard the announcement from the DfC Minister that £17 million in funding has been found to mitigate the Winter Fuel Payment cut but we don’t yet know who will be covered and who won’t. We don’t know how it will work.

“We do know that this is an issue because of the campaigning we and others have been doing. People are angry and our campaign has majority support.

“Pensioners like myself will continue to fight for it to be reinstated.”
