Speaking following Infrastructure Question Time in the Assembly, Mr Durkan commented: “Street lighting plays an integral role not just in road safety but in community safety.
“Well-lit streets are an essential element in helping to deter crime, reduce accidents and create a sense of security for residents.
“This is even more important as we approach the darker winter mornings and evenings.
“But too often repairs can be delayed, even one outage on a dark street corner, makes such a huge difference in terms of visibility.
“Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve heard directly from women about how unsafe they feel going about their daily business; whether that’s walking to a car after work or going on a morning run.
“In the wake of recent events and heightened anxiety, the number of street lighting requests which I received within the last week was staggering.
“I welcome the Minister for Infrastructure’s assurances that he will ensure street lighting is serviced properly.
“This issue of course requires commitment not only from the Department for Infrastructure but also collaboration and dedication from local councils who have responsibility for managing parks and leisure spaces.
“Though this may seem like a small issue, it is of great importance and will ultimately contribute to safer access to public spaces and could help foster a greater feeling of security for all in our communities.”
