Freeze the Cuts campaign spokesperson Ellen Moore has said the £100 on offer from Minister Gordon Lyons to pensioners won’t buy them much these days.
She said: “We don’t think the response from the DfC Minister to our call to mitigate against Starmer’s Winter Fuel Payment cut is good enough.
“£100 doesn’t get you much these days given the outrageous price of gas, oil, and electricity.
“It won’t cover many pensioners heating bills for even two weeks.
“And what’s the point of telling us we’re going to get this support after the winter? Many older people are freezing in their homes right now, and they need support today, tomorrow, and this weekend.
“We know the Stormont Executive has felt pressure to provide hardship support because of the campaigning we and others have done, and we know that’s why there’s at least something being done.
“But we’re not satisfied with this. Stormont can do a lot more. Nearly 300 people die every year because of the cold.
“Freeze the Cuts is not going to stop campaigning. Too many of our friends and people in our communities are struggling right now.
“We want the minister to get support out immediately. We want Stormont to fully mitigate the cut. We want to see it reinstated.
“We’ll be keeping up the pressure on Stormont and Westminster.
“We want something done about the unaffordable prices energy companies are charging and their outrageous profits.”
