People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has called on the people of Derry to make a special effort to attend the weekly Peace Bridge IPSC demonstration at 5.30pm this Friday, November 29.
“Friday’s IPSC ‘Bridgil’ is held to highlight the ongoing genocide in Gaza and coincides with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People,” said the Foyleside councillor.
“This day is observed annually on November 29th and serves as a reminder of the inalienable human rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and the right of return to their homes.
“We are entering the 14th month of unrelenting hell delivered on the men, women and children of Gaza by Israeli war criminals.
“We must do all we can to bring down the Israeli Apartheid regime and uphold international law by making these criminals pay for their genocidal actions.
“We will be calling on Derry and Strabane Council to demand the British government comply with the International Criminal Court arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant.
“Following the ICC arrest warrants, there can be no further justification by the British government for arms or military support for Israeli terrorism or for the Irish government not to impose sanctions.
“Council has a BDS policy and has agreed to develop an Ethical Procurement Policy but we must fight to make sure these initiatives are fully and urgently implemented.
“We fully support requests from Council area based Palestine solidarity campaigners to meet with Council officers and Councillors to discuss how to implement BDS effectively.
“For Derry, a City synonymous with Civil Rights, to become an Israeli Apartheid Free Zone can send a powerful message of solidarity to Palestinians and out to the world.
“Grassroots resident, community and organisation led action is the key to making Derry an Apartheid Free Zone and to making sure Council implements BDS in a principled way.
“People Before Profit will be at the IPSC weekly ‘Bridgil ‘on Friday at 5.30 pm on the Peace Bridge, we call on others to join us.
“While genocide continues everyday should be Palestine Day.”
