People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer’s promises are ”truly worthless”, accusing him of betraying the WASPI Women.
Said the Foyleside councillor: “The Labour Party’s recent decision to deny compensation to the WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaigners is yet another significant betrayal of trust and a stark departure from pre-election promises by the British Labour Party.
“Starmer explicitly promised to support the WASPI women in their fight for justice.
“He said he would make addressing the financial hardships caused by the changes to the state pension age, an absolute priority.
“Starmer’s promises are worthless lies.
“Liz Kendall, Labour’s Work and Pensions Secretary, now says, despite the Ombudsman ruling calling for compensation, that it would not be a “fair or proportionate” use of taxpayers’ money to do so.
“Millions betrayed yet again by this horrible Red Tory government.
“These women like so many others placed their trust in the Labour Party.
“Starmer’s leadership has been one big lurch to the right and an abandonment of everything that the Labour Party is supposed to stand for.
“Under Starmer’s leadership most electoral promises have already been broken.
“Tuition Fees: Starmer had pledged to abolish tuition fees, yet this promise has been quietly sidelined.
“Public Ownership: Commitments to bring key utilities back into public ownership have been significantly watered down.
“Green New Deal: Environmental policies promised during the leadership campaign have been virtually abandoned.
“Through trade union organisation and through mass mobilisation we must put manners on the Starmer regime.
“Replacing the hated Tories with another party of austerity and capitalist values is not the change that people demanded.”
