SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has said that the views of residents living near the Magee University campus must be heard during the expansion process.
He raised the issue in the Assembly on Monday during questions to the Economy Minister.
Foyle MLA Mr Durkan said: “Everyone recognises the huge positive impact that university expansion will have on Derry – growing our economy, creating more jobs and offering more opportunities for people to pursue their studies here.
The SDLP have been campaigning on this issue for decades, we secured the commitment to 10,000 students in New Decade, New Approach and it’s welcome that we are seeing long overdue progress.
“However, if not managed correctly, the increase in student numbers could cause chaos for those communities in close proximity to Magee.
“Some residential areas are already choked with traffic and others have seen a deluge of speculative planning applications for Houses of Multiple Occupancy.
“To alleviate concerns, engagement with residents and community representatives is vital going forward.
“The involvement and buy-in of other agencies with responsibilities is also imperative – particularly the Department for Infrastructure given their role in bringing forward traffic management solutions and public transport links that should reduce dependency on and volume of cars coming into the area.
“Today I asked the Minister for an update on efforts by the university to identify opportunities for new, purpose built student accommodation – which will alleviate pressure on existing neighbourhoods and could move much of the student population towards the city centre and provide a boost for businesses there at the same time.
“I welcome that the Chair of the Magee Taskforce, Stephen Kelly, recognises both these issues and opportunities and will be addressing a meeting of neighbouring residents on February 6 to discuss their concerns.”
