It follows a successful amendment proposed by the SDLP Opposition in March 2024 to consider biennial MOT testing for cars under 10 years-old and an earlier call for evidence initiated by the SDLP in government.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Motorists across the North have been frustrated in recent years with significant delays in MOT test appointments.
“The process of securing an appointment has arguably become more nail-biting than the test itself.
“The SDLP believe that a move to MOT testing every two years will relieve pressure on the system and on overwhelmed staff who are trying their best to deliver.
“Moving to a two-year cycle, even in the short term, would act as a pressure release valve for everyone involved.
“This is a small but necessary improvement that could make a big difference in the long run.
“I would urge people to respond to the Department for Infrastructure Public Consultation on biennial MOT testing which is open until the 16 April 2025.”
