The Loughs Agency, in collaboration with Dennett Anglers and the Dennett Valley Men’s Shed, has hosted a tree-planting event at The Mill Pottery to celebrate the completion of extensive fisheries improvement works in the Dennett catchment.
The event brought together representatives from Loughs Agency, Dennett Anglers and the Dennett Men’s Shed, as well as pupils from St Michael’s Dunnamanagh and Donemana Primary School, to plant trees and reflect on the collective improvements carried out to enhance aquatic habitats, promote biodiversity and support sustainable land use.
From a £41,340 investment, Loughs Agency’s Fisheries Improvement Unit has delivered a series of projects to transform the Dennett.
These works included the creation of a 2km riparian buffer zone with 3,000 native broadleaf trees planted to stabilise riverbanks, reduce excess erosion and provide shade for aquatic life.
In addition, eco-friendly bank restoration techniques have been applied to 65m of the river, while 250m² of previously dry gravel has been regraded back into the river system to improve spawning conditions.
Two hundred (200) tonnes of spawning gravel was introduced to enhance fish reproductive success further, and five habitat units were installed to create refuge areas for aquatic species.
To reduce livestock impacts, 13 offline drinking solutions were installed, along with the development of four designated river access points to minimise damage to riverbanks.
Speaking on the project, Kelsie Geddis, Loughs Agency’s Angling and Fisheries Improvement Manager, said: “These fisheries improvement works show the transformative potential of investment and collaboration.
“This work encourages healthier waterways, supports fish populations and strengthens biodiversity by addressing key challenges in the Dennett catchment.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work carried out by so many people, and it will benefit the environment and local communities for generations to come. Well done to all involved.”
Damien Devine of Dennett Anglers added: “The Dennett is a cherished natural resource for our community, and we are proud to see these improvements ensuring its long-term health and sustainability.
“The results of this work demonstrate what can be achieved when organisations come together to benefit our waterways.”
Loughs Agency will be in attendance at the upcoming North West Angling Fair, which takes place at the Melvin Sports Complex, Strabane on 29th – 30th March 2025. The organisation remains committed to protecting and enhancing the rivers and waterways in its catchment area for future generations.
