People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin
The meeting will be held 7pm Tuesday, April 8, in the Ráth Mór Centre in Creggan.
Speaking at the meeting will be Amie Gallagher from the Focus Project, Siânna Lafferty representing the campaigning tenants union CATU and sponsor of the People’s Housing Bill MLA Gerry Carroll.
People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin said: “The Stormont Executive has the appearance of setting ambitious plans for house building, but the targets are missed every year because funding isn’t prioritised.
“Stormont can act to build affordable social housing, reduce private rents, stop unjust evictions and bring empty properties back into use to address housing scarcity.
“The lack of housing impacts the mental health, education and stability of those trapped on the waiting list and in temporary accommodation, including many thousands of children.
“The levers to take urgent action to address housing scarcity exist, and People Before Profit will test these legislatively through Gerry Carroll’s People’s Housing Bill.
“But Stormont operates to facilitate profiteering by big developers, vulture funds and corporate parasites just as much as Westminster and the Dáil.
“The key to drastically shifting Stormont’s priorities will be a housing campaign that puts feet on the street and disrupts business as usual.
“Fundamental change on Stormont’s housing policy will only happen when there’s a united working class push from below.”
